OS X Yosemite review: Macs finally play nice with iPhones

Image
Now that Apple has moved to an annual OS X release, Mac users can expect regular iterative improvements to their desktop operating system instead of occasional ground-breaking shifts.  OS X 10.10  – named for California landmark Yosemite National Park – includes several sorely needed advances that help your Mac play nicely with your iOS devices, but it’s still basically the same OS you already know, just with a nicer coat of paint. First revealed back in June at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, OS X Yosemite moves slightly toward Apple’s flat new design style, which first showed up in iOS 7. However, Yosemite doesn’t take the aesthetic to the flat extreme of iOS. The corner window sizing icons are now flat instead of bubbled, and the dock, finder and Messages now have translucent edges. Handoff The new Handoff feature in Yosemite and iOS 8 lets you jump from the app you’re using on iOS to its Mac equivalent and pick up where you left off. ...

Apple just introduced a SIM that you don’t have to replace when you switch carriers

Image
Apple didn’t announce this during its event today, but it has created a SIM that makes switching carriers as easy as a few taps without having to visit a physical carrier store. The  Apple SIM  that ships in the new iPad Air 2 just made switching carriers and traveling abroad about a hundred times easier. Instead of having to replace a SIM every time you want to connect to a new carrier, the Apple SIM lets you choose carriers in both the US and UK from the Cellular Data setting in the iPad. This is what Apple says on it’s iPad Air 2 page about the new feature: The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you — with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip. While this is great for the iPad, the Apple SIM...

Apple unveils the iPad Air 2, an even thinner 10-inch tablet with Touch ID

Image
Apple has unveiled the iPad Air 2, a successor to its incredibly thin 10-inch tablet from last year. The overall design is largely the same, with slim bezels on the size and slightly larger ones at the top and bottom. The original iPad Air was heralded for being as thin as a pencil; the iPad Air 2 is 18 percent thinner, coming in at a ridiculously skinny 6.1mm. To achieve this feat, Apple swapped out the Retina Display for a laminated version, leaving no air gap. It also includes an anti-reflective coating, which Apple says has never been included in a tablet before. (Image: Original iPad on left, two iPad Air 2s stacked on the right) The iPad Air 2 also comes with a new chipset, the A8X, which was created specifically for the device. It uses a second-generation 64-bit architecture, which should improve performance across a range of tasks. Apple says graphics performance will be 180 times faster than the original iPad.
