Apple offers U2’s new album Songs of Innocence for free, exclusively until mid-October on iTunes

U2 performed at Apple’s iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Watch launch event today, but there was another announcement the band was saving for the end of its short set. Starting immediately, the band’s latest album is available for free on iTunes.
The record, called Songs of Innocence, is exclusive to Apple’s music store until mid-October. After which point, it will presumably be available in a physical format, in other digital marketplaces and on iTunes for a standard album price.
(This is a developing story. More to follow.)
